DEBUT returns for their third recital at the Royal Opera House of 2019. This time we will be performing in the ROH’s iconic Crush Room, for what promises to be a wonderful hour of trilling music and fascinating insights into the worlds of both opera and song.
As ever, we look forward to the normal DEBUT format for our recital, we’ll be chatting about the music during the concert as well as meeting guests as you arrive - and encouraging you to join us for a drink (whether tea or fizz!) once the performance ends!

Biographies
Rose Stachniewska soprano
British soprano Rose Stachniewska is a Samling artist and Britten-Pears Young Artist. She recently graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) where she studied with Wilma MacDougall and won first prize in the Ye Cronies Opera Competition. She graduated with distinction in her master’s from the Royal College of Music where she studied with Rosa Mannion and John Blakely. Rose was a member of the ENO Opera Works programme in 2016.
Recent performances include Anne Trulove (cover) The Rake’s Progress (British Youth Opera), Greta Fiorentino Street Scene (RCS), Pamina Die Zauberflöte, Adina L’elisir d’amore (Westminster Opera Co.); Nun in Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel (Scottish Opera), Adele Die Fledermaus (RCS), Soprano 1 in Le Vin Herbé by Frank Martin and Le Renard/La Soeur Jumelle in Les Malheurs d’Orphée by Milhaud (RCS). Opera scenes have included Nanetta, Melisande, Adina (RCS); Dorinda, Susanna, Servillia (ENO Opera Works); Zerlina, Gretel, Euridice, Helena (RCM). An enthusiast for modern repertoire, Rose has also premiered a number of roles including Alice in Now by Lewis Murphy (RCM), Harlequin in Black Sand by Na’ama Zisser (Tête-à-Tête Opera) and Anne Brontë in Glassworks by Leo Geyer as part of Helios Collective’s workshop series ‘Formations’.
Nia Coleman soprano
British soprano Nia Coleman has just completed her training at the Alexander Gibson Opera School in the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where she has been studying with Scott Johnson and generously supported by RCS Postgraduate Scholarship. Nia previously studied Music and Drama at the University of Manchester where she was awarded First Class Honours and twice awarded the Procter-Gregg Prize for Performance; afterwards she went on to complete a Master of Arts in Vocal Performance at The Royal Academy of Music. For RCS Opera, Nia’s performance highlights include the role of Bubikopf in the Scottish premiere Der Kaiser Von Atlantis by Viktor Ullman; Kitty Hart in UK staged premiere of Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking, and the role of Zerbinetta in excerpts from Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos, including ‘Grossmächtige Prinzessin’.
Nia recently performed as guest soloist for the RSNO Chamber Concert at the Glasgow Royal Concert Halls singing the Cantilena from Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas-Brasileiras with artist in residence, cellist, Johannes Moser. Nia’s work as an actress has seen her perform the role of Juliet for a traditional play performance of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in a promenade production at Manchester’s Heaton Park throughout August 2018. She has collaborated on several occasions with cross-arts company Hanbury & Groves most notably on Sister in 2016. Nia is a grateful recipient of the Independent Scholarship Award 2018-19.
Vicky Yuan-Labarre flute
Vicky studied a Master Degree in Music Performance at the Royal Academy of Music in London, studying Flute with Karen Jones & Clare Southworth, and Piccolo with Patricia Morris. Her early successes include winning the Taipei Flute Competition in 2008 and performing with Kuang-Jen Symphony Orchestra and YMCA Symphony Orchestra in Taipei National Concert Hall as Principal Flute. In the third year of her Bachelor of Music, she played as a guest flautist for the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in London, and performed in its National Gala. Whilst studying in London, Vicky was appointed as Principal Flute and Principal Piccolo of the Royal Academy Symphony Orchestra and performed in Duke’s Hall and King’s Place under Sir Colin Davis, Sir Mark Elder, Sir Heinz Holliger, Christopher Austin, Stuart Morley and musical director Jennifer Whyte.
Vicky also performed Contemporary music in the Dancing Festival in January 2013 and was very highly commended in the Jonathan Myall Piccolo Prize in March 2013. She then became a member of the Royal Academy Wind Ensemble and performed chamber music regularly. She played as a Principal Flute for the London Graduate Orchestra from 2013 to 2014 and later held recitals for Royal Academy of Music, St John's Smith Square, Kings Place, St James Piccadilly, the Royal College of Arts and The Place, King's Cross.
Ella O’Neill piano
Ella O’Neill performs regularly across the UK as a song and chamber music pianist. This April, she performed in the finals of the Kathleen Ferrier Awards at Wigmore Hall, where she was awarded the Help Musicians UK Accompanist’s Prize in memory of Arthur and Gwyneth Harrison. Other recent venues include Cadogan Hall, St Martin-in-the-Fields, and the Dora Stoutzker Hall, Cardiff, where she performed Brahm’s Liebeslieder Walzer as part of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World’s fringe series.
Away from the concert platform, Ella has worked as a répétiteur for Grange Park Opera, Welsh National Opera, Mid Wales Opera, Operasonic, Barefoot Opera and the Tête à Tête Festival. Ella graduates from the Royal College of Music this July (2019), where she has been studying postgraduate piano accompaniment with Simon Lepper, Kathron Sturrock and Roger Vignoles. During her time there she won the Alasdair Graham Pianist Prize in the RCM Lieder Competition and second prize in the Brooks van der Pump English Song Competition. She also won the Bryan Davies Memorial Piano Accompaniment Prize at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where she completed her undergraduate degree with first class honours.

Founded by soprano Lizzie Holmes in 2015, DEBUT celebrates the UK’s brightest musicians through intimate and alternative classical concerts and events. Their acclaimed monthly concert series ‘DEBUT at Shoreditch Treehouse’ has showcased over 150 musicians and has been featured in Opera Now and Classical Music Magazine as ‘a great introduction to some of the best talent’.
Recent performers include saxophonist Manu Brazo (BBC Introducing Artist); baritone Julien Van Mellaerts (New Zealand representative for Cardiff Singer of the World 2019) and pianist Sunny Li (Steinway Artist). DEBUT has performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Proms on the Roof, Royal Academy of Arts, V&A, St James’ Piccadilly, the Old Operating Theatre and runs a private music series for the Birley Clubs in Mayfair. From Autumn 2019 they launch a new series at the Cutty Sark, supported by The Carne Trust.
